Hallstatt, Austria – The Magic & You

Hallstatt is a small piece of paradise, located in Austria, 50 km away from Salzburg.

Austria is one of our favorite European countries. Extremely cultured people, beautiful scenery and history, the country of Mozart, Strauss and many other artists, that will remain forever live in our hearts. Austria is a country located in Central Europe, bordered by Switzerland and Liechtenstein to the west, the Czech Republic and Germany to the north, Slovenia and Italy to the south and Slovakia and Hungary to the east. In addition a very large part of the Alpines are a part of Austria.

Although small, Hallstatt has a very old history and it is known for its salt production, a resource that is very important for the country. The most interesting thing is that part of the salt mine was accessible for visits. The temperature in the mine is -12 degrees Celsius. A little train is waiting for you at the entrance to take you through the narrow tunnels of the mine. The duration of this journey is about an hour. In addition to the train, you have the opportunity to ride a railway, a boat and for the adventurers there is a special slide made of special frames. For those who are afraid, there are stairs. You even have the opportunity to try the salt from the walls, awesome, right?

Hallstatt is also a quiet, romantic place, where you can enjoy the natural beauty of Lake Hallstatt, the surrounding green mountains, the beautiful swans, the narrow and picturesque streets. A true paradise for your senses. No doubt after your visit, you will feel happy and emotionally relieved. The town is very small, which gives you the amazing opportunity to visit it from end to end only in a day, to enjoy and explore as much as possible the numerous souvenir shops, magnets, handmade soaps, bags, hats, and many other merchandise. We also recommend having a cup of coffee and trying the apple strudel in a cozy cafeteria of your choice.

Right in the center of the town on the left is the historical museum where you can get in touch with the history of the city and its surroundings, watch a short film about how the salt mines are created, and even to touch the wax figures of the first people living in the vicinity. They had been thickset, due to the fact that they had to go through narrow and low tunnels in the mines. Hallstatt can be visited throughout any time of the year. But you should know that often the place is enclosed in mists because it is a mountainous place, so it will be good if you are warmly dressed, even in the summer, some top will do a very good job.

Transportation in Hallstatt

Since the town is quote small it can easily be toured on foot, and for those with cars, there is a paid parking available at the city entrance, the price for which is 3 euros per hour. If you are traveling by bus or train, the city is also accessible from the cities of Salzburg or Vienna. If you are coming from Salzburg by bus, you should get off at Bad Ischl (a summer resort in Austria) and from there you can go to Hallstatt by train. It will be your most pleasant trip, the train passes through extremely beautiful places with magical views. The train will leave you out of the town, which is why you have to cross the lake by boat to reach Hallstatt.

If you travel from Vienna, you can go directly by train. Tickets can be bought from Westbahnhof (train station) and you can go via a direct train from Steinach-Irdning directly to Hallstatt.

Hallstatt is one of the cities in Western Europe we would definitely recommend visiting, so let us know if you have been there!
